The country's 2nd largest woodland needs your help

Gwynns Falls / Leakin Park covers nearly 1,000 acres of forest, trails, streams, and history in the middle of Baltimore. These extraordinary natural and historic assets require consistent stewardship.

Check out these opportunities to help us with maintenance, beautification, and safety improvements.  Our goal is to create an environment that residents are proud to visit and volunteers are excited to care for.

Why volunteer with us

Every week, FOGFLP volunteers do the work that keeps this park alive: clearing invasive vines off native trees, tending the herb garden at Winans Chapel, greeting Sunday visitors, and hauling out the trash people leave behind. None of it happens without you. No experience needed — just sturdy shoes and a willingness to spend time outside.

Trail Work Crew

Every Tuesday  9–11 AM
Join our weekly trail crew to remove invasive vines, clear fallen limbs, and care for recently planted trees. It's hands-on work with a friendly group of regulars. Newcomers always welcome.
Good for: early risers, nature lovers, anyone who likes the feel of a pruning saw.

Herb Garden Team

Every 3rd Saturday  8–11 AM
Tend the herb garden alongside master gardeners and learn about Maryland's native plants. A beautiful way to start a Saturday, even if you've never gardened before.
Good for: gardeners, plant-curious beginners, anyone who wants to learn as they go.

Second Sundays

Every 2nd Sunday April - November
Help set up or take down; welcome visitors with tips, directions, and a friendly face; or  This is a great way to meet the park community.
Good for: people who like people, weekend regulars, anyone who can spot a trailhead on a map.

Trash Cleanups

Periodically

Sadly, there’s no end to the trash that people leave in the park. We pick the spot that needs the most love, and get out there and clean it up together.
Good for: anyone who's ever walked past litter and wished they could fix it.

Quick answers to common questions

Do I need to register every time, or just once? Once. Fill out this form and we'll add you to the list for the opportunities you checked. You'll get an email when the next session is on.

Can I bring my kids?  Most of our work is family-friendly — especially the Second Sunday setup and our trash cleanups. For Trail Work Crew and the Herb Garden, we recommend ages 12+ because of the tools. Note your kids' ages in the form and we'll let you know what to expect.

What should I wear and bring? Closed-toe shoes with good grip, long pants, and layers you don't mind getting dirty. Bring water and sunscreen, and gloves. We have some tools, but bring your own if you have any favorites.

What if the weather is bad? We work in most weather, but we'll email you the morning of if we need to cancel for lightning, extreme heat, or ice. Rain alone isn't usually a showstopper. We just dress for it.

I've never done this before. Is that okay? More than okay. Someone from the FOGFLP team will show you what to do and work alongside you. No experience needed.

How do I get to the meeting spot? After you sign up, we'll email you exact directions and parking info for each session. Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park is big — we meet at different spots depending on the work.
