Park Run - Free 5k Run and Walk (13 Jun 2026)

This free 5K run occurs every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM. All ages are welcome. While many serious runners join us, Parkrun is not a race-- it is a fun run or walk for good health or to track your times. There is an optional social afterwards.

Kids and strollers are welcome. Dogs too! (one dog per runner). Participants tend to span all age groups and levels of fitness.

Our group of dedicated runners let almost nothing stop them, so we're out if it's sunny and beautiful, or if it's snowy and cold. Rarely, weather conditions or global pandemics do force us to re-route or cancel. Check out our Facebook page for last minute updates.

Family Nature Hike: Tree Tales & Tree Spirits (13 Jun 2026)

NOTE: This is a Carrie Murray Nature Center (CMNC) event taking place in Gwynns Falls-Leakin Park

Step into the forest and meet the trees who have been standing watch for centuries. Families will learn how to read the “stories” written in bark, branches, and leaves — discovering how trees grow, communicate, and support the life around them. Then, bring your imagination to life by sculpting your own "Tree Spirit" from natural clay, using leaves, twigs, seeds, and stones to form expressive forest faces. A joyful afternoon of art, storytelling, and connection with our woodland elders!

Second Sundays continue with another full day of family-friendly programming, outdoor exploration, and community gathering in the park. Visitors can enjoy:

Tiny Chapel Concert Series Returns

Featured During Second Sunday | June 14 | 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

One of the most anticipated additions to this year’s programming returns this month: the Tiny Chapel Concert Series. Inspired by the spirit of connection, creativity, and storytelling, the Tiny Chapel Series brings together music, nature, and community in a uniquely Baltimore experience.

This special edition will feature music by our house band inside the Winans Chapel and special guest musician, trumpeter, and jazz artist Rahmlee Michael Davis, who has worked with Earth Wind and Fire, Phil Collins, The Jacksons, and many other notable artists, performing some of his greatest musical contributions outside in Gwynns Falls Leakin Park. Come early, grab a seat (inside the Chapel or bring a lawn/camping chair), and enjoy live performances in one of Baltimore’s most beautiful outdoor spaces.

Community Announcement: Resources Secured for the Park

Join us for a special community announcement highlighting major resources secured for the future of the park through advocacy efforts led by Friends of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park and Delegate Malcolm Ruff the District 41 Delegation, Department of Natural Resource and Baltimore City Recreation and Parks during this year’s Maryland General Assembly session.

Thanks to coordinated community advocacy and partnership efforts, the park secured:

$280,000 for State Park Master Planning (FY27)
$2 million in capital funding for park improvements (FY28)
A pathway to an additional $2 million from the Green Space Equity Fund

This announcement will share more about what these resources mean, next steps for the city-state partnership park effort, and how community members can continue shaping the future of Baltimore’s first proposed state park.

Ferns of Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park: A Last-Day-of-Spring Walk (21 Jun 2026)

A 3-hour walk through 400 million years of plant history

This event is co-sponsored by the Maryland Native Plant Society.

Spend the last day of spring getting to know the oldest plants in the park. On most walks we admire the flowering plants that arose in the age of the dinosaurs — but ferns go back much further. The first ferns appeared in the Devonian and Carsboniferous periods, when plants ruled the world and the great coal beds were being laid down. Join us to meet the living descendants of Earth's earliest vascular plants.

We expect to see 11 of the 13 fern species our resident naturalist Thayer Young has documented in the park, including New York, Christmas, Sensitive, Southern Lady, Broad Beech, Northern Maidenhair, and Ebony Spleenwort ferns, plus a patch of Field Horsetail. We've added an extra hour — three hours instead of the usual two — so we can see everything at a slow, relaxed botanizing pace.

What to Expect

We'll stay mostly on trails, with a few short ventures off-trail to reach the ferns. One stretch is rocky, so please wear sturdy shoes with good ankle support. Ticks and biting insects are active this time of year, so dress accordingly. Portable toilets are available at the parking lot, and the flush restrooms at the Carrie Murray Nature Center may be open during our walk.

Who Lives Under the Rocks in Gwynns Falls?

Cool off with an afternoon of creek exploration and discovery! Join a naturalist as we hike to the stream and search for aquatic wildlife hiding beneath the rocks and flowing waters of Gwynns Falls. Using nets, observation tools, and curiosity, participants will investigate the tiny creatures that help keep our waterways healthy while learning about the ecosystem that surrounds us.
